This Friday 5 March 05 March 13:00 17:00 Hrs, Seven Harare schools will celebrate the International Womens Day through cultural and contemporary performing arts sharing experiences in gender equality. The event will take place at Mabelreign Girls High School.

The day will also bring in at least two different organisations: Women and Law in Southern Africa Research and Education Trust and The Mbira Society Zimbabwe to work together enhancing a multi sectoral approach to gender issues. The International Women's Day (8 March) recognizes women's rightful struggle to be an equal half of humankind. The day is set aside by the United Nations as a special day to celebrate and show support to womanhood and the girl child the world over.

Why Mabelreign Girls High School?

The school has just recently established a music department for the girls. In December, the department got their first musical instruments: 10 Nyunga Nyunga from the Mbira Society Zimbabwe. However, to fully equip the department with the required various educational material, fundraising will be a major aspect of this event. Proceeds from this event will go to the Music Department to purchase different musical instruments and creating an active music department as part of the girl's curriculum.

Nature of the Fundraising:

The 5th of March, a Friday will be civvies day. Every student at the school will pay a dollar in her class towards the fundraising activity as agreed with the schools Headmistress. The Music Concert starting 13:00Hrs that day will charge a dollar per person to enter the arena for both non performing students and teachers. Refreshments and snacks will be available for sale in the arena. Not less than a thousand dollars will be realised from these three processes. Pledges are expected from most invited guests who include United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the Curriculum Development Unit, Women Lawyers Association of Zimbabwe and Educative and Reflective Arts!

Schools participating in support of this cause to participate include Roosevelt Girls, Dominican Convent, St Giles Special School, Borrowdale Primary and Harare Girls High School. Young Mbira diva Hope Masike and her band Kakuwe will be the main guest band and ironically Hope Masike is a former student of Mabelreign girls High School. It will be good seeing her back at her old school!

Some might ponder why...

The fundamental objective is for the event to raise a financial resource on the day that will buy a 6 Piece Marimba set, Piano & Vocal Scores and Guitars for the Music Department. This will furnish the students with a variety of musical instruments to practice on and enhance their understanding of musical concepts as taught in the class.

White Ribbons and the artistic activities will show support and instill the spirit of celebration of womanhood and the girl child. Zimbabwe Women's Lawyers Association will share information with student s on domestic violence issues, the Act and progress in the constitution process. Eventually the day will afford Mabelreign Girls High students and the invited schools the opportunity to perform on stage, interact, network and share skills and experiences with each other!
